Windermere Neighbourhood

Description

The city of Edmonton annexed Windermere Estates from the County of Strathcona in 1982. As of 2010 Windermere still had crops in the fields and a few barns remaining.

Big Island, on the west side of the river opposite the River Ridge golf course, is a 28-ha natural area that belongs to the province. Big Island was a popular spot for picnics in the early 1900s; John Walter’s ferry, “The City of Edmonton,” transported people there on weekends and holidays.
